ART 208.01 Introduction to Sculpture PROJECT
TWO: The Body in Space In our first project we focused on the body as a transformed object, a thing in space. But what happens if we focus on the space
itself? How are we, as bodies, defined
and shaped by the spaces we occupy? Architecture has a visceral effect on us
that we often overlook. But in fact, our memories (and dreams) are filled
with sensations of being in a particular space and place. And if we can say
that we inhabit our bodies, maybe it
is our experience of this interior body space that is meaningful. Or
conversely, maybe our sense of our bodies is formed through our experiences of
the places we inhabit in the world. The Creative Challenge The challenge for this project will be for you use significant space memories as source material from
which to build a sculptural experience. You can choose to focus on the body
as a space or your body in a space. But either way, the goal is to mine your experience
for powerful feelings and memories of spatial relationships that can be
translated into shapes, volumes, textures, and forms. Your challenge is not
just to recreate/represent a space or place but rather create something
that expresses the nature of your experience of it. Source Artists Anthony Gormley, Louise Bourgeois, Alberto
