PROJECT TWO: The Body in Space

Initial Design Development Phase (20% of project grade)

Part 1. Reading and Writing: Read the pdf on Blackboard, Part 2 of Eyes of the Skin by Juhani Pallasmaa, as a way to get you thinking about the experience of space as something visceral (what it feels like) not just visual (what it looks like). Then write about a place  (actual and or dreamed) that has had a significant impact on you. This writing should be no less than 800 words You will probably find it challenging to write this much. But that is my intention.

This writing should aim to achieve a deep level of recall; not just describing the apparent circumstance (objective), but getting in touch with your internal subjective experience expressed in deep-seated visceral, tactile and auditory forms. In other words, consider the psychological dimension of your experience and how you experience that psychology in physical terms. Think of this writing as an extended impressionistic poem that dissolves your body into the space of your memory!

Email me your writing as an attached MS word doc title lastname_proj2_memory.docx

Part 2. 2D sketching: Create 4 full-page, detailed drawings/collages as a way to begin to visualize your experience of this place. Please use a variety of drawing media (not just a pencil.)

á       Draw the space as you remember it.

á       Draw the place from a unique, specific human spatial point of view (yours).

á       Make a drawing that captures the experiential quality of the place (not what it looks like but how it feels).

á       Make a drawing of the place that is in some way inspired from one of the project source artists.

Part 3. Initial 3D Modeling: From these sketches make two 3D models created from wood, cardboard, paper, foam core, wire, and found objects. These two models should explore two different approaches to expressing what you drew and wrote about.
