THEA204 Modern Dance I
This course covers technique and fundamental principles of modern dance. Emphasis is on the intelligent, informed use of the body applied to dance as a performance art form. Theory and practice of improvisation will be introduced, and classes are designed to stimulate mind and body. This course satisfies the general education requirement in arts.

THEA232 Struggle, Survival, and Subversion: African-American Expression in American Culture
This course will examine the role of African-American expression in American dance, theater, literature, music, and film from the 1830s to the present. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how artists and writers have inscribed the African presence and shaped American thought and culture.

TFMS 250 Movement I

This course is designed for students interested in self-growth and/or performance. Designed to heighten students’ awareness and understanding of their own bodies and movement habits and the process and importance of non-verbal communication. Corrective work in basic movement mechanics leads to increased flexibility and fitness, better alignment and less stress in performing everyday movements, and to a more relaxed, confident presence on stage. Tools of movement analysis and terminology are presented. Improvisation frees inhibitions, challenges the imagination, and develops students’ abilities to work well within a group. This course satisfies the general education requirement in arts.

TFMS258 Dance in History
Designed for the general student, this course will serve as an introduction to dance as a theatrical art form and an expression of popular culture. The function and significance of dance will be examined in relationship to historical periods and a variety of cultures. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of 20th-century American dance and its roots in Asian, European, and African traditions. This course satisfies the general education requirement in arts.

TFMS260 Movement and Masks
This introductory level course will engage students in the theory and praxis of movement and mask performance studies. Primarily an active, experiential class, the use of masks in a variety of cultural contexts, performance venues, and actor training will be explored. Basic movement skill building, readings, discussion, and mask making will be included. No prerequisite.

THEA304 Dance Improvisation and Composition
This course is designed to provide experiences in synthesizing theory and praxis in the creation of performance studies. Emphasis is on creative expression and the development of specific tools with which to compose, direct, and perform original work. The relationship of improvisation to composition is explored, and the current movement towards interdisciplinary performance art is reflected. Students investigate a wide variety of source materials for performance projects.

THEA 307 Modern Dance II
This course covers technique, improvisation, and principles of modern dance at an intermediate level. Emphasis is on the intelligent, informed use of the body applied to dance as a performance art form. Though the focus will be on modern dance technique and improvisation, other contemporary dance styles, including jazz, will be introduced. Prerequisite: THEA 204 or consent of the instructor.

TFMS350 Movement II
A continuation of Movement I, the emphasis of this course is on theory and practice of movement characterization and special performance challenges, such as stylized or nonrealistic performance, stage falls, combat, and historical styles. A variety of approaches, including masks, animal movement, and psychological gesture are employed as a means to physicalize dramatic characters. Class work includes ongoing work on fundamental movement skills and principles. Prerequisite: THEA 259.

THEA368 Mask Study
Masks serve as catalysts in the creative process and tools in performance training. Neutral mask work challenges students to heighten the expressivity of their movement while striving for greater awareness and control. Character mask work enriches imagination and further develops methodology and skill in characterization. Warm-ups emphasize relaxation, concentration, and conditioning. Prerequisite: THEA 259 or consent of the instructor.

THEA415 Topics in Dance
This course involves study of an aspect of dance technique or theory (e.g., jazz, ethnic dance, ballet, dance composition). Subject matter and credit value will be announced prior to each offering of the course. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: THEA 204 or consent of the instructor.

TFMS460 Creative Movement and Dance in Education
A course for students interested in working with movement, dance, or drama in creative arts education for children or young adults. This will be an experimental course combining theory and praxis and is open to the general student. The technique of improvisation will be explored extensively as an educational tool. Readings and writing assignments will be included, as well as field experience in a local public school. This course satisfies the general education requirements in arts.

WMST200 Introduction to Women Studies
This team-taught interdisciplinary course introduces students to different movements in feminism and explores major issues in women studies such as work, sexuality, power, knowledge, and creativity. A group of five to ten faculty participate in the teaching of this course.
