ART 493 SMP 1/ ART 333 Adv. Research and Writing for SMP

Fall Semester 2014/ Schedule

We meet or have writing work time every Wednesday night from 8:30-9:20 with only a few exceptions as noted below. The following is a schedule for all class assignments including:

 

  • Journaling (on going entries)
  • Sources Notebook (initial 6 entries DUE Sept 10 then one or more weekly)
  • Annotated Research Bibliography w/ 8 annotated entries* (4 entries DUE Sept 17 / 4 more DUE Nov 12)
  • Research Notes: weekly entries as scheduled in your Research Plan
  • 2- 1200 word Source to Self Essay* (#1 DUE: Oct 15 / #2 DUE: Nov 19 )
  • 2- Peer Interviews* (#1 DUE: Oct 1 / #2 DUE: Nov 5)
  • 5- Art Event Write-Ups* (due 48 hours after each event)
  • 2- Studio Visit Summaries* (#1 DUE: Oct 29 / #2 DUE: Nov 19)
  • 4- post-critique reflections* (see SueŐs assignment)
  • Concise (250 word) Artist Statement (to serve as exhibition wall tag)* DUE: Dec 3
  • Additional Document Book text including an introduction, table of contents, and other optional writings. DUE Nov 24 (outline), Dec 1 (full text)

Class: Overview of all assignments, Posting to Google drive etc.

Assignment: Read 2011 Document Book samples (at least 3, available on BlkBd) DUE: Wednesday, Sept. 10

 

Assignment: Begin Journaling (see journaling assignment page)

 

Assignment: In consultation with faculty and fellow SMPers begin identifying source artists and non-art sources that. Create no less than 6 Sources Notebook entries (see sources assignment page). DUE: Wednesday, Sept. 10

Class: The Research Bibliography (w/ librarian Pamela Mann) meeting in LI112 (writing center) BRING YOUR LAPTOP (if you have one)

 

Assignment: Begin assembling your research bibliography for one artist from your source notebook (see bibliography assignment page). Instead of quantity we want quality so try to identify what you believe are the best options including 4 books, 2 articles, and 2 internet sites. Due Wednesday, Sept. 17th

Class: Develop communal interview questions for first interview.

 

Assignment:

Tape record the interview, transcribe your partnerŐs responses, and send to your partner for final editing before posting (see interview assignment page) Due Wednesday, Oct 1

 

Assignment: Proceed with your research including

á     write a research plan (what you will read/ write by when up to Oct. 8. Post to your google folder as lastname_reasearchplan and post on your studio wall). This plan must include research on no less than 2 artists (ie- your initial one and one more) DUE Sept 24

á     acquire texts

á     reading and take reading notes Due according to your schedule

All of which must result in:

á       annotated bibliography with no less that 4 entries Due in 3 weeks! Due On Wed Oct 8.

Assignment:

á       Add to your sources notebook all suggestions made in your mid-term critique. DUE Oct 29

á       Select two or more artists on your updated sources list and add to your bibliography (at least 2 significant sources per artist) DUE Oct 29

á       Update your research plan if applicable.

Ultimately all research must result in:

á       On going research bibliography (non-annotated, citations of significant texts on multiple artists that represent your interests)

á       4 more annotated entries (for a sem. total of 8) (see bibliography assignment page). Due in 3 weeks! Due On Wed Nov. 12.

 

Assignment:

After a thoughtful consideration (including points made at the mid term critique) write 5 interview questions specifically directed to your partnerŐs artwork and goals. (see interview assignment page) Email these questions to your partner. DUE Oct 29

Reread all 6 SMP 2011 Document Books (on BlkBd) Take notes about what you think is particularly successful and not. Develop your plans for the content of your book particularly what additional content you plan to add and how that helps unify the various individual documents in the book. Due next class, Nov 12

Complete final draft of 1st source-to-self essay. Due next class, Nov 12

Class: discuss document books and review 1st draft assignment  as follows:

 

Assignment:

Read: About Wall Tag and Document Book Introductions

 

Write: First draft of Document Book (keep as word doc, DO NOT CONVERT) (see document book assignment page)

This first draft should include:

a.    A description w/ table of contents (no page numbers) that explains your strategy for organizing and unifying your bookŐs content

b.    All required entries correctly formatted and edited

c.     Additional content:  You need not write out all of the additional content you plan to include BUT you MUST either write a synopsis, annotated outline, or rough draft of what it will say each of these items. One of these items MUST be an introduction.

A 250-word work statement that will be used as exhibition label (can be distilled from your introduction or be a statement in itself.) Upload/convert to google drive as lastname_walltag
