ART 493 SMP 1/ ART 333 Adv. Research and Writing for SMP

Peer Interview Assignment

A direct person-to-person conversation can often be a more accessible way to articulate your art making ideas and intentions. Likewise, the written response interview can be a great intermediary step between the casual discussion and writing a formal artist statement.

You will conduct two interview sessions with your critique partner (you interview them and they interview you) in the semester. For the first interview, the group will decide on 8 questions that everyone will answer. For the second interview, your partner will develop 8 questions specifically directed at your work and concerns. I recommend interviews be completed as verbal discussions that you record and your partner transcribes.  Your partner will give you that transcription which you can then edit. If done with a degree of attentiveness, you will find your responses a helpful resource for future art writing. But you need to take the questions to heart and put some thought and effort into your answers. First thing to remember is that a couple of sentences will not make for a meaningful response. Also remember that conversation (the back and forth follow up) is what makes this exercise special. So donŐt just answer the questions by submitting a transcript; follow up with questions back to your partner that cause both of you to think more deeply and clearly about your answers that will take your thinking to the next level.
