class, W 23): Browse David SmithŐs
work (Google image search and artstor) and select
two favorite sculptures, draw them (nicely) and comment as why you like them,

that happen (one sketchbook page per sculpture.) |
M 21 * |
No Class |
W 23 |
Assignments Due: David Smith research Class Activity: Drawing in the landscape (bring sketchbooks and dress
warmly!)
Create no less than
two drawings a day for the next 7 days. Each drawing should be a full
sketchbook page. Write your name, date, and location on each. The goal is to
distill form not draw what you see. Use black markers, ink, or some other
graphic drawing medium that allows you to focus on line and shape. |
M 28 |
Class Activity: Tech instruction/ carpentry 1 |
W 30 |
Assignments Due: 7 days of drawings Class Activities: 1. Assign design teams 2. Post (on class design wall) and share drawings 3. Transform drawings into
sculpture ideas via 3D collaging Assignment: Sculptural Collages (due beginning of next
class. M 4): Create no less than 3
sculpture relief collages inspired by your drawings. Each collage should be
mounted on a 9Ó x 12 Ň paper. |
M 4 |
Assignment Due: 3 sculptural collages
Class Activity: Tech instruction/ carpentry 2 Assignment (due Monday 11): Carpentry Practice 3 practice wood
joints |
W 6 |
Class Activities: 1. Presentation: Understanding site analysis as a means to
achieving an integrative design approach á
Understanding site factors o
Behavior (human circulation/movement through the
site) o
Function (what happens in this site) o
Place (the various things that constitute identity
of the immediate site and broader context) o
Architecture (the physical and visual design of the
site) o
Practical limits (constraints such as time, cost,
structure) á
Ways of integrating these factors into a design 2. Begin group analysis of site
/ loading dock area (each team takes notes) Assignment (due next class, Monday 11): Read The Garden as
Idea, Place, and Action (PDF on Bb) Identify and record
two favorite quotes about the meanings of gardens (write on separate index
cards and posted to design board) Assignment (due Wednesday 13): Site Analysis Report Teams produce a
written site analysis report that includes a consideration of the above site
factors concluding with the identification of specific design opportunities (ultimately to be narrowed down to only 4)
1. Read Chesapeake Bay: An Introduction to an
Ecosystem (PDF available on Bb) and then select a specific dynamic of our
local environment that particularly interests you and do further research.
This research should result in a context posing (one page, single
spaced) consisting of: á
A single compelling piece of information á
2 paragraphs of summarizing your
research á
A page of the most visually interesting
and relevant images (approx. 4-5 images) á
Your research bibliography 2. Select another
aspect of local identity you believe might be relevant to our gardenŐs sense
of place. Research it and complete a
second context posting as above. Research can be based on primary sources
(interviews, artifacts) as well as secondary texts. |
M 11 |
Assignments Due: 3 wood joints, reading
quotes Class Activity: Gardens and Their Meanings: A lecture by art
historian Cristin Cash Assignment: Experiencing our local gardens (due Monday 25): á
Arboretum Tour á
Historic St. MaryŐs City Walking Trails á
Lucille Clifton: The Poetry Walk at St.
JohnŐs Pond Or any other garden
area on campus including á
Church Point á
Trinity Church Cemetery á
Garden of Remembrance á
Any of the designed campus outdoor spaces (townhouse quads, campus center, etc.) Record and reflect on your experiences by
keeping notes, drawing, and photographing as you tour and use these materials
to write a reflection of your experience (to be posted to our design wall).
Illustrate your writing with photos and or drawings. The writing should
include: o
A description of the garden (one page) including its location, a
brief physical description, its purpose and or common community use, basic
info about its history. o
Commentary as to the
effect this place has on you: ¤ Overall frame of mind ¤ physical feelings ¤ meanings (communicated through symbolism, metaphor, ritual
(action as meaning) etc.) o
What in the specific
physical layout of the place makes these happen? (w/illustrations
when appropriate). Connect your experience to one or more points made
in the Garden as Idea reading. |
W 13 |
Assignments Due: Site Analysis Report Class Activities: 1. Complete Site Analysis
including a class vote on which 4 design
opportunities will be pursued. 2. How to produce CAD aided
scale drawings 3. Begin measuring site/ produce
a site plan (in teams w/ CAD and measurer) |
M 18 |
Assignments Due: Context research,
site drawings Class Activity: Tech instruction/ welding Assignment (due M 25): Welding Practice o
|
W 20 |
Class Activity: Each teams build a site model |
M 25 |
Assignment Due: Experiencing local
gardens and welding practice Class Activity: Site model construction conŐt Assignment: R&D phase self- assessment (Due next class
W 27) Write a reflection
and self-assessment reviewing all of your efforts for activities in this research and development phase of the
class (use assignment summary page as a guide). Comment on specific
assignments and how you think you might have improved them. Conclude by saying
what grade you would give yourself and why. |
W 27 |
Assignment Due: R&D phase self- assessment due Class Activity: Site model construction conŐt
or begin initial design assignment (below) Assignment: Complete Site models (Due M 4) Each design team must
come up with one for each type of design
opportunity. Each Idea will be presented to entire group in the form of á
A written (typed) description and
rationale that includes comments on how each design idea responds/coordinates
with the following site factors: o
Behavior (human circulation/movement
through the site) o
Function (what happens in this site) o
Place (the various things that
constitute identity of the immediate site and broader context) o
Architecture (the immediate physical and
visual features of the site) o
Practical limits (constraints such as
time, cost, structure) á
Initial visualizations (drawings,
models, photos, photo montages etc.) |
M 4 |
Assignments Due: Site models and Initial design ideas Class Activity: Group review of initial design ideas Assignment: Designing/ Round 2 (Due W 20 with statements
emailed to all class members Tuesday 19) Use class feedback to
develop and revise design ideas resulting in a second round of design
proposals. Each team will produce á
Well developed scale models (one for
each of the 4 design components) á
A draft of a design statement (Lisa will provide examples)
including the following: o
Comments as to your teams overall design
approach and intentions including primary motivations and goals for the garden. o
A brief explanation/description of each
idea and why you believe it to be appropriate for our garden including (when
relevant) how the design coordinates and compliments with specific site
factors (behavior, function, place, and architecture. o
A feasibility report that includes a
description of fabrication requirements and materials for each idea. |
