Some Suggestions

Identify the purpose of an assignment within the goals and objectives of the course.

What level of original thought or analysis do you expect?
How does the assignment feed into the rest of the course content?

Give students opportunities to discuss their progress and what they are learning in class. This promotes exchange of ideas and gives you an opportunity to monitor progress.

Give students time to fail. Ask for feedback in a variety of formats (bibliographies, topic paragraphs, etc.) at regular intervals in order to avoid last minute changes of topic.
