LEAD 301.03: Philosophy in
Love and Friendship
Fall 2025
Michael Taber & John Crook
St. Mary’s College of Maryland, USA
The materials for the
seminar consist of three required books, each available in paperback, as well
as various articles and selections I will distribute, the sequence of which is
listed on the course schedule page.
The books are:
1. Symposium
by Plato, translated by Nehamas
& Woodruff, (2009,
Hackett Publishing: 978-0-87220-076-0)
Please don’t mess this up by getting some other
translation/pagination.
2. The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis (1960; reissue 2017 by HarperOne: pb 0062565397)
3. Friendship,
Robots, and Social Media by Alexis
M. Elder (2019, Routledge: 0367889439)
Some of the readings in the seminar schedule are links to
New York Times or Washington Post articles, to which you can gain access at no
additional charge because our library has worked out a deal with the NYT and with the Washington Post whereby
all SMCM students, faculty, and staff can activate a subscription at no
additional charge. (Your tuition $$ at work.)
