Back to Schedule / Back to Course Index IVT105/ Types of Seeing Drawing Assignment One often assumes that representational art
expresses meaning in a straightforward (denotative) way. Likewise, it is
often assumed that the artist who creates a representational image is simply
observing and recording that which is there in front of them. But we have
read about three artists who have very different notions of what it means to
capture a likeness and thus what representation entails and expresses. In
this drawing assignment you will be given the task of representing a simple
object thru four different approaches as a way to think more deeply about
what seeing and re-presenting is all about. 1.
Create 4 Drawings (pencils, paper and objects will be
provided) Drawing 1: Draw the object
through observations of touch only while it is in a paper bag). Drawing 2: Draw the object
by memory (look at it only for 1 minute) Drawing 3: Draw the object
from direct visual observation. This drawing should strive for precise
accuracy including all levels of detail, accurate proportions, accurate
perspective, and light effects. (Hint: This drawing should take you no less
than 30-45 minutes to draw). Drawing 4: Draw the
photograph of the object (provided). Grid your paper exactly as the provided
photo. Strive for complete accuracy and duplication. 2.
Reflection Writing (no less than two pages) Reflect on your experience with these different ways
of seeing. Contrast the different
challenges of re-presenting the object in each of the four Ôtypes of seeingÕ (each drawing). What
strategies did you develop to accomplish each? (in
other words, what was the key to achieving accuracy change in each condition?
What was harder and easier in each? Making specific connections with
the ideas expressed in our class readings (Close, Giacometti, and Horn). Any
overall thoughts about the act of representing? Submit:
