to Course Index IVT105 / Pictionary Project Like the traditional Pictionary
game you have been supplied with a single word, and as the artist,
your challenge is to create an artwork that communicates the ÔessenceÕ of
this word/idea to your audience (classmates). But unlike traditional
Pictionary where players often fall back on illustrative (denotative),
sign-language based solutions, your challenge will be to infuse your work
with its meaning on as many levels as possible. Thus, your goal is not to
make an artwork that can be most easily guessed (purely denotative meaning)
but rather, one that arrives at its meaning through a combination of
denotative and connotative approaches and by using as many aspects of visual
meaning we have reviewed in class as possible. To this ends, please use our types
of meaning handout as a reference. Assignment Part 1. Explore
(in writing) the meaning of your assigned word (2 pages) The
word you have been assigned is intentionally open-ended and therefore you
need to consider the range of possible meanings and decide the specific way
you will define and focus your artwork. Look up your word in multiple
dictionaries and look up the definitions of related synonyms as a way to
expand your understanding.
Once you have an idea of how you
want to define this word, write about all of your associations it brings to
mind as a way of beginning to understand the qualities you will want your
artwork to express.
Assignment Part 2. Create the Final Artwork Create
an artwork in any media that visually ÔexpressesÕ the word you are assigned.
Consider a wide range of ways to make your meaning. Go beyond denotative
images and subject matter by considering all items on our master Ôtypes of
contentÕ list.
Assignment Part 3. Self- Assessment (2 pages) After
hearing your classmatesÕ interpretation write a response and assessment addressing
the following: á
What did they say? How was it different than your intentions? á
How do you account any differences between your intentions and their
interpretations? Was it an aspect of the work that you didnÕt account for?
Was it due to personal associations? Did you make assumptions about the ways
things mean that didnÕt hold true (and why?) á
In hindsight, what would you have changed? á
What realizations about expressing
oneself through art did this experience reveal? Submit: Assignment part 4 pages including images of your
pure form study and your final project should be printed for your notebook
and placed after assignment part 1writing. |
