Form Variation Collage Assignment

In our 20 lines assignment you were challenged to become aware of the multitude of form options in  something as simple as a single line.  Now, working with an extremely limited range of forms you are challenged to employ variations of composition, color, and format to create an abstract collage that expresses either calm or anxiety.

Part 1: Group Collage Working in groups create a collage using only the following elements:

Givens:

-   1 circle

-   6 straight lines

-   2 simple shapes of your invention

Variables:

-   Composition

-   Format

-   Color (field or single color per form)

-   scale

You can make these shapes by cutting them out of white or colored paper. You can change the color of the shapes (paint or pastels) but you cannot draw or paint  additional shapes (only field variations of texture and color ). One person in your group should take notes that record the reasons why the group make their decisions for our class discussion.

Part 2: Written Analysis (no less than two full pages not including images)

Write a visual analysis of one of the class collages (not your own). Be sure to be looking at the artwork itself as you complete this writing (Lisa will also email images for reference). The goal of a visual analysis is to link cause and effect where the cause is the specific way the artist has used form and the effect is what that form expresses. Name specific aspects of the artworkÕs form using BusterÕs terms and categories and describe how each visually contributes to the overall expressive goal of the collage.

Note: To create a good argument youÕll not only have to describe in detail the form of the work, youÕll also have to elaborate on the idea expressed (in other words, what specific feelings, sensations, and or conditions constitute a state of anxiety or calmness?  Write in such a way so the linkages between cause and effect are direct, explained, and compelling. Be as specific as possible and pay attention to how you describe what you see. DonÕt just describe in a neutral way, use evocative language that makes your point.

Do the same for qualities that you believe visually detract from the overall expressive goal of the collage.
