Excerpts on artists Chuck Close, Alberto Giacometti, and Roni Horn

This compilation reading contains statements by and about three artists whose goal is to create portraits through representation. BUT the nature of their artworks and the statements they make reveal VERY different ideas about what constitutes representation (creating an image after the likeness of something).

1. Take Notes: Carefully read these three short statements. Identify and write down quotes that you think address each artist’s notions about the nature of representation.

2. Answer the following questions for each artist (one page or more for each).

• Describe what each artist says is their specific goals the when it comes to representing what they see (you can quote the artist). What is it they are trying to capture?
  
  
• How do these goals effect the way they go about it creating their work (process)?
  
  
• How do these goals reflect their overall attitudes about the nature of representation?
  
  
• Contrast artists to each other as a way to clarify their differences.
