20 Lines Studio Assignment

How many decisions does an artist make in creating a single work art? How important is it to be aware of each decision and the endless options one can choose from for each?  This drawing exercise is meant to get you in touch with the endless expressive options even a simple formal element such as a single line can offer. It is very important for artists to always work with an awareness of their full range of form options and to be able to understand how the form choices they make contributes and enhances meaning in their artwork.

Assignment: ÒDrawÓ 20 individual, significantly different types of lines on a paper no less than 17x 22Ó

  • Variation is key!
  • Do not draw things (narrative content) just allow your self to explore the expressive potential of marks.
  • Try using a variety of drawing tools.
  • DonÕt overly rely on configuration changes (looping, zig-zags etc.) to constitute differences.
  • Consider creating different lines by changing the process of how you make your mark or even by how you define what it means to ÒdrawÓ.
  • Can you invent a line that expresses a specific emotion or state of mind?

Submit: Bring drawing to class for in-class review and then place in notebook (no writing component.)
