Phase VI: Artist Talk / Public Presentation
The intention of your artist
talk is to shed light on the nature of the work you are exhibiting and place it
in a context of other relevant art and art critical issues. You will need
slides of your work (particularly earlier works not in the exhibition) and
slides of historic and contemporary art that illustrates relevant ideas and key
issues. A good deal of the content for your talk will spring from your artist
statement but it should not necessarily be a reading of it. A big difference
between your essay and this slide talk is that your talk will hinge on specific
visual analysis. We will look for your ability to not only name the other art
that you find akin to your own but also to be able to address specific
relationships of visual form and concept. You might choose to talk about your
process or the development of your body of work but you will need to be more
than simply descriptive. You need to strive to explain how your specific
process is integral to the ideas
and intentions in your work.
A couple of hints-
á
Start the process by
writing a detailed outline and be sure to include key critical issues.
á
Be very clear as to what
point you want to make when you show an image.
á
Think about your talk
early on in your research process as ideas begin to come together- take slides
of important images as you go rather than doing a frantic search at the end of
the semester.
