PHASE IV: Artist Statement Outline and 1st Draft

 

 

Your artist statement is the long version essay ( 6-8 pages) in which you will define and explain your work in terms of its critical issues and relationship to ideas and concerns of contemporary and historical art.  It should include:

 

1.     A clear thesis summarizing three critical issues you believe to be most central to your work.

 

2. Paragraphs in which you fully articulate each of your three critical issues by

-       Fully exemplifying the issue through a detailed visual analysis of your artworks (specific ones)

-       A contextualization of each issue by comparison with other artists or art movements that engage the same issue in similar or contrasting ways. (no less than three throughout the entire essay)

-       Discussion of relevant non-art sources if appropriate.

 

Your artist statement ÒabstractÓ is a condensed version of your essay.  It should include:

-       A thesis statement similar to that which appears in your essay.

-       1-3 additional paragraphs that condense your three key issues. Artists and influences etc. as addressed in your full essay.

 

Always work on your abstract after your essay. It should be no more than two pages.
