PHASE III:
Research and Reading
You've
gotten some feedback on your critical issues and now it is time to flesh out
these ideas with more research. You have the harder task of finding a few key
things to read that help you advance your conceptual understanding of your key
issues and this might involve art critical sources that can be more difficult
to find than monograph material on individual artists. Other art faculty might
be able to help you find these sources. You need to meet with at least two
outside advisers this (other than me) and you should use these meetings as a
means to get help identifying these readings. Meet with your selected faculty
(they do not have to be art faculty) and show them the same material you
presented in your 'Starting Point Presentations' (current work, exhibition
plans, and summary of your critical issues). Take notes during your discussions
and submit them to me by the date stated below.
You
also need to continue your reading about individual artists in preparation for
your 6-8 page artist statement essay and lecture. Reconsider the artists that
you are researching in the context of the specific nature of your work for your
exhibition, your critical issues, and the suggestions you received from the group
and outside advisers. Identify no less than three primary artists and continue your research including
building your annotated bibliography by adding new entries (particularly
focusing on periodical sources), ordering materials from MAI or interlibrary
loans, rereading old and new material taking careful notes for use in your
essay
