Quarter – Continued

days (Oct.20- Nov.

Assignments (see below for details)
1. Final Mid-term assessment (critique
summary) with goals for 3rd quarter (also to be posted in studio).
Due Monday, Oct. 24
2. Create studio work to present at the
3rd quarter review (no less than three sketches and three completed works).
Due
Monday, Nov. 7
3. Complete research entries on at least
three more artists and continue developing your visual reference library (as per
mid-term critique feedback) Due
Monday, Nov. 7
1. Assess
and redirect
After
drafting a summary of your mid-term critique and thinking about it further (our
group discussion) it is now time to redraft your mid-term assessment and
include your thoughts about your next steps. Before we used the approach of
identifying questions that new work might seek answers to. As before be both
broad (what are my overall expressive goals) and be specific (what are my
immediate plans and what will you commit to complete by the next review on
November 7th). This is akin to your first directions proposal but this time you
have some results and lots of feedback to factor into your plans. Remember,
plans are simply propositions that are explored as you make new work not a
priori artistic decisions. Specific studio plans should be more like Ôwhat ifÕ
questions than a formula to follow.
Your
mid-term assessment should include:
a. A summary
of your critique (what was perceived as strengths and weaknesses of the work,
what were the issues that were said need addressing, what was perceived as some
of the workÕs future potential / what future directions were suggested, what
resource references were mentioned (artists, history, non art etc.).
b. Your
response to some or all of the feedback you got.
c. Goals for
your 3rd quarter work (expressive intentions and specific production goals)
2. Studio
work
What you do
next really depends on how you are feeling (explored in your mid-term
assessment). Do things need to be shaken up? Are you happy methodically
continuing to developing the path you are on or do you feel like you need to
add new fodder to the mix? If you are exploring new ground or plotting further
development remember that initial brainstorming is still very important. This
might be an excellent moment to re-look at the medium choices youÕve made, It
is also far enough along that you might begin thinking about presentation
(weÕll be hanging a show seven weeks). Ideally your studio work for this
quarter should be a mixture of response to feedback in both exploration and
developed work modes (in other words, sketch type activities to scope out new
moves along with fleshed out works to see results). Even though this 3rd
quarter is only 20 days long you are going to want to push extra hard to get a
lot done because youÕll probably find you are extremely busy the 4th quarter
preparing statements, journals, and exhibition samples.
3. Expand
your research
Research at
least three artists that were brought up during your mid-term critique or from
other studio visits. Continue to add to you visual library particularly in the
context of mid-term critique comments.
