Preliminary Reading: TBA  DUE M 17

 

Research: Look up the work of at least two other artists (from list above) and comment on the specific way their work engages and defines an idea of place.  Do they work in an existing environment (site specific) or do they create their own environment (installation). You can address the artistÕs intentions in general but always use one or two specific works to exemplify your points. Please correctly attribute all references and images (simple footnote / bibliography will suffice). DUE M 24

 

Analysis: Define and explore the idea of art that directly engages its environment (the place where it is made, the space it becomes). Comment on the different formats through which artists explore place (installation, earthworks, site specificness, literal vs recreated spaces etc.) Write on the possible implications of ÔforegroundingÕ place in oneÕs work (how can it effect the workÕs meaning?) How do artworks that are installations function differently from those that are object-based? DUE W 26

 

Studio Project and Intention Statement: Create a work that is an environment (in model or actual scale) or create a site specific work (actual or model form) DUE W2 Photo document your project and comment on the specific way you engage your audience in your sculpture and how that effects (makes) the meaning of the piece.
