Text:                              Set Theory and Metric Spaces,  by Kaplansky.

 

Topics:                           Partially Ordered Sets, Relations, Countable Sets, Cardinal Arithmetic, Well-ordering, Axiom of Choice, The Continuum Problem.

 

Tests and Grades:         There will be four exams (worth 50% of your course grade).  One of the four exams will be the non-comprehensive final. Homework will also be 50% of your grade.  The exams will be the same or similar to the homework. 

 

                                       Dates for the exams: TBA + Final: 2:00-4:00, Dec 10, 2001.

 

Classes & Homework: The classes will consist of lectures and discussions. Homework will be assigned regularly and will be graded. You are encouraged to work together on homework assignments. There will be feedback on the homework problems either in class or during the office hours. You are also encouraged to ask questions and participate in the in-class discussions. It is important that you review the materials covered on a regular basis in order to keep up in the course.
