During
the past 23 years at St. Mary's College of Maryland, Darlene
Gentry (VanGaasbeck) has taught courses and workshops
centered on sexual assault awareness, prevention and self
defense.
Some
of the history about these classes are summarized here.

1990,
Darlene began developing sexual assault prevention classes
after one of her students told her story about being
assaulted by her date off campus. With the help
of Dr. David Romano, Director of Health Center and Counseling,
she began developing and teaching workshops.

1993
recipient of the Faculty Student Life Award for her
work in raising public awareness about campus sexual
assault and the establishment of self defense courses

1995
a second section of self defense course became a permanent
addition at SMCM.

1996,
self defense course voted most popular courses on campus
according to a survey conducted by the Athletics Department, SMCM.
-
1998,
added dynamic simulations to all self defense courses.
-
1998-2012,
begin teaching non-credit women's self defense courses
called R.A.D.
(Rape Aggression Defense) in the community under various venues.

1999,
students obtain 300 signatures in petition for R.A.D. at SMCM.
-
1999,
created new website: Violence Against Women Prevention
Information Network (V.A.W.P.I.N)now called S.A.V.I.N) sexual assault and violence information network.

2000,
R.A.D. courses
offered free to women students, faculty, and staff sponsored
by the Public Safety Department, SMCM.

2002-2003,
men and women's R.A.D. courses offered through Continuing
Education and Professional Programs Office, SMCM

2006-2012, free R.A.D. courses sponsored by Women of Promise Ministry Team, Lexington Park Baptist Church
